| Neo-Russia / Gundam Commissar
The Gundam commissar actually starts with the Matyrushka Gundam. I thought, why not in the center of all the stacking dolls, have a regular Mobile Suit? You can see at the bottom of the sketches a little drawing of the Commissar sitting in the Russian doll. Commissars were political officers attached to the Soviet army, predominately in WWII. They did things like urge soldiers into suicidal attacks and shoot those who retreated (as seen in "Enemy at the Gates"). Anyway, since I was going to have a little army of Matyrushka MS, they could be marched into battle by the Gundam Commissar. I ditched that idea, but liked the design of the Commissar so I briefly entertained the notion of submiting him as an entry on his own. He's not a very creative design, I merely turned a uniformed soldier into a MS. But I think the design has a nice cohesion and there are some cool details. I like how the breast pockets were turned into chest vents and I like the way the thrusters on the thighs suggest the puffy uniform pants (I forget what those kind of pants are called). But I also thought it was too serious a design for G-Gundam, and not as tasteful as I would like. |
